Oh wow, I updated within less than a month. Freaky.
So, here are my projects that I submitted for finals, for you to view and criticize. Enjoy!
Animation 1 -
[link]"Door Scene" final. Your character is told not to open a door, but does it anyway. Here's my interpretation of it.
Visual Storytelling -
[link]Had to present a pitch on the final day for a story you made up. I chose to make it a comic, and I read it out loud to the class. This is "One Shot," and it features Jonathan, Diane, and Violet (with quick cameo with Marcellus! 8D ). 24 pages long.
Character Design -
[link]The idea was to choose an artist to take influence from, a story with interesting characters, and a theme/setting. I chose Tex Avery, the Wizard of Oz, and Ancient China.
Figure Drawing for Animators 2 -
[link]Basically a portfolio of all my best pieces from class. I'm incredibly happy with it, minus one or two drawings in there. I've successfully gotten that "A" I've dreamed about since last year. C:
Yeah. Go wild.
(And yes, I'll be working on that OCT over winter break)

Also, I like your figure drawings.
Thanks!
The animation is amazing, and it's so short but I imagine that it must have taken A LOT of time to do that much for that short amount of time. But it was so fluent and looked really professional!!
I really love how it's kind of sketchy- do you think that you would publish it like that? I think it would look really interesting/different. I really like how you have some color for the blood. Violet is SCARY. Every time I see you avatar I'll quake in fear. :< And I don't think I could have read it out loud in front of my class. I died when I had to take speech. ;_; That's awesome that you did it, though!
I was intrigued by your combination, it's random but it's good! Your drawings are great, after I finish the comment here, I'll go take a better look at them!
And nice figure drawings!! Do you do a lot of gesture poses because it's for animators? And do you do a lot contour? My life drawing tells us this story about this animation majors who hated contour drawings, and all transferred to CalArts together around the same time. One by one, they came back and apologized because they realized that animation is all contour. x33
Anyway, I loved them all so much!!! Excellent, amazing work!!!
I'd really rather have the whole comic cleaned up though, I'm trying to get the whole thing colored. Maybe it won't be published, but it would make a nice portfolio piece. xD
Yeah, Violet is kind of a scary person. I humanize her a lot in the OCT since she's got so much baggage going on, but through the eyes of any normal character, she's a real bitch.
Talking in front of an audience isn't that bad! I even had to do voices for all of them, it was kind of fun. xDD
As for the figure drawings, it's not necessarily contour that animators have to worry about. Line quality and positive/negative space, yes, but contour drawings aren't what most animators do. In fact, my figure drawing teacher would mark off points if you go with only contour. It's drawing THROUGH the forms, to understand that you're drawing a 3-dimensional figure on a 2D surface while still retaining all the knowledge of anatomy, gesture, proportions, etc. Animation is definitely not all contour, an animator needs full knowledge of the form (sculpting the form, as others might call it), it just appears contour because of the way it's rendered in the end.
I think it would look good colored, too! But I just liked how it looked, because a lot of comic art is so... polished? But I think if you were to clean it up, it'd look awesome too!
I thought she was interesting! I like your characters, I want to see more!!
And that's better than any animation I could do, that's for sure!! x3
Oh I see! Apparently, there this long-time animation teacher at CalArts who is obsessed with contour, lol, so my professor is always telling us that story because she's a total contour enthusiast. x3
That's really intresting how the different types of art (animation, fine arts, illustration, etc.) All require life drawing, but each one has it's little twist. x3
In about 3 weeks, I'll be posting up the next set of comics for Round 4 of the Spire Isle OCT, so there will be more. xD
Violet is scary.
I was particularly intrigued by your your gesture drawings. Really nice!
But yeah, man, seriously. I'm diggin' all of this.
Thank you! Yeah, life drawing is really fun, but it takes some people a while to get into that mindset. I might be uploading my cafe drawings stuff later. C:
Have fun with your life drawing class!
